Let’s face it — breakfast has always been the trendiest (and best) meal of the day. Over the years, we’ve seen a rise in superfood acai bowls, adaptogenic lattes, and of course, the breakfast classics that will never go out of style (think: french toast, pancakes, and smoothies).  

Looking back at these breakfast trends… one could say we have a sweet tooth. And, they’re not wrong. I mean, if you can enjoy a meal that’s equally as indulgent as it is healthy, why wouldn’t you? Well, probably for lack of time. But, a year into the pandemic… we have all the time in the world! While the pandemic disrupted morning routines for 80% of parents, the extra time in the kitchen definitely paid off. Increased time at home sparked innovative and delicious breakfast trends across social media that didn’t disappoint (we’re looking at you, dalgona coffee). 

Since it seems like remote work is here to stay, it should come as no surprise that one of the biggest 2021 trend predictions is enjoying breakfast like a king. 

With that being said, we have every intention of satisfying your sweet tooth! Ahead are our favorite indulgent breakfast trends that you can expect to see rising in popularity.

5 Indulgent Breakfast Trends You Need On Your Plate

#1 Pancake Cereal 

While we’re ready to leave last year in the past, one thing we’re not leaving behind is Pancake Cereal. TikTok deemed Pancake Cereal the #1 food trend of 2020, and we’re savoring the moment well into 2021. After all, the recipe name alone is reason to salivate! Combining two classic breakfasts together is well — genius — and has us wondering, what other breakfast trends have we yet to discover?

Just as you’d imagine, pancake cereal is mini pancakes made into cereal. 

The trick to getting the perfect, crispy pancake is creating a batter consistency on the thicker side. While you can create your pancake batter as you would normally, a few healthy swaps can enhance both the texture and the nutrition. 

Swap #1: Most traditional pancake recipes call for inflammatory oils (such as canola or vegetable) — try coconut or avocado oil instead! 

Swap #2: Swap refined white flour for a wholesome alternative like oat, almond, or coconut flour (just make sure you’re using the proper proportions when substituting!)

Swap #3: Trade the dairy for a plant-based alternative, both in your batter and in your bowl. 

Once your batter is ready, pour your mixture into a piping bag or bottle. Squeeze the pancake mixture onto a heated skillet in the shape of tiny circles. Once your mini pancakes are ready to be served, all that’s left are the toppings (the most important part). 

Add your pancakes into a serving bowl and combine with (dairy-free) milk and a drizzle of maple syrup. To enhance the already mouth-watering experience, top with bananas, nut butter, and raw cacao nibs if you’re feeling fancy!

#2 Breakfast Charcuterie Boards

Pinterest Predicts that breakfast charcuterie boards will be one of the top 2021 breakfast trends to look out for, and we’re betting this trend is here to stay. Picture an indulgent breakfast board filled with all of your favorite sweet morning treats: waffles, pancakes, french toast, muffins… are you convinced? And, it doesn’t stop there. Sides of maple syrup and raw honey, homemade chia jams, and of course, all of the fruit! 

The best part about it? All of these indulgent breakfast recipes can be made healthy! Think chia pudding in place of sugary options, oatmeal energy bites, or almond flour muffins for healthy options! 

#3 Coffee Everything

Coffee is a morning must-have. And, according to the Whole Foods trend committee, you can expect to see coffee in more places than just your coffee cup — hallelujah! 2020 was the year of Dalgona coffee, so what’s next? Well, coffee, everything. Since coffee is expected to be one of the major 2021 breakfast trends, expect the energizing beans to appear in the form of coffee yogurts, coffee blender bombs, and coffee keto cups! Yum.

Here are some sweet ways to incorporate this pick-me-up into your morning:

  • Replace half of the liquid in your morning smoothie with cold brew. 
  • Add a scoop of espresso to your favorite bliss balls.
  • Add a splash of cold brew to overnight oats. 

#4 Plant-Powered

According to a survey by IFIC, there has been a significant rise in plant-based eating over the past year, showing a 28% increase in plant-based protein! With delicious plant-based alternatives for seemingly all animal-based products, eating vegan is easier than ever. 

Luckily, this means all the recipe indulgence without deprivation. No eggs? Substitute Flax or Chia! No dairy? No worries. From oat milk (which has seen more than a 2000% growth!) to pistachio milk, the dairy-free alternatives are endless.
