7 Self-Care Tips For Post-Election Stress

Self-care has never been more important.

By: Rebecca Jacobs

There’s no denying the fact that this week (or really this year) has been stressful. From the global pandemic to Election Day and throw disrupted sleep into the mix, thanks to the end of daylight saving time, so many of us are feeling the weight of it all, leaving us feeling on edge and just downright anxious. And, while we can’t eliminate all the stressors going on around us, we can tune into how we’re feeling and start implementing some self-care practices that we all can do, right here and right now. Here are seven ways to take care of you today and cope with that post-election stress.

7 Self-Care Tips to Cope With Post-Election Stress

#1 Meditate For 5-10 Minutes Today

No matter how much time you have to dedicate to self-care today, everyone has five minutes to stop and be present. Press play on a FitOn meditation to get grounded before your day gets started or to just re-center in the middle of a hectic and stressful day.

Using the power of meditation isn’t only a valuable tool we all could use to help us cope what post-election stress, but it’s something we can use no matter what stress we have going on in our lives.

Try one of our brand-new meditations to get started:

#2 Be Ok With How You’re Feeling

It’s ok to accept that you’re feeling extra stressed or anxious. Sometimes just acknowledging that feeling is far less stressful than trying to pretend that those feelings aren’t there. Today, simply check in with how you’re feeling and ask yourself what you need.

Do you need to take a day away from social media or take some extra time to just be alone and away from all the outside noise?

Just doing a quick check-in with how you’re feeling is a great start in helping us work through all that post-election stress.

#3 Limit Your Social Media Use

With that said, being mindful of your social media use this week may not be such a bad idea. In fact, a social media detox is something we all could probably benefit from.

This doesn’t mean that you have to go an entire day without checking social but maybe set some boundaries around it, like limiting your time before bed or choosing meditation and exercise in the morning over scrolling through your phone.

#4 Be Kind to Yourself

Today, be extra kind to yourself. This can come in the form of pressing play on a workout, doing some yoga when you’re feeling stressed after the busy day, or just giving yourself some extra grace during this stressful time.

Chances are, if you’re feeling that post-election stress, those around you may be too. So, as you practice kindness to yourself, spread kindness to those around you too. Kindness is contagious, and studies show that kindness actually makes us happier!

#5 Move Your Body

Exercise is good for mind, body, and soul, and there’s something for everyone, no matter how you’re feeling today. Tune in to what your body needs today and find a workout that will help you bust stress or unleash that inner Zen.

#6 Sip on a Comforting Drink

Take a five-minute break from the busy day and curl up on the couch with a mug of herbal tea to help settle post-election tension, even if it’s just for a few minutes.

Try to steer clear of caffeinated beverages if you’re already feeling anxious, and try a comforting drink like chamomile tea or bone broth instead.

Want to get a little fancy? Here’s a Turmeric Latte, right from FitOn PRO, that makes the perfect warming beverage to curl up with when you’re feeling stressed.

  • 1 cup almond milk, or milk of choice
  • ½ tsp turmeric
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp coconut oil
  • 4 drops vanilla stevia (optional)

Add the milk to a saucepan over medium heat. Once warm, add the rest of the ingredients. Remove once heated.

Pour into a mug and enjoy!

#7 Get to Bed Earlier

With the time change and election coverage on at all times of the day, it’s easy to get caught up in it all and stay up way too late, but here’s the thing — a lack of sleep is only going to make us feel more stressed. If you’ve been feeling stressed and totally wiped out lately, try getting to bed even just a half-hour earlier. Getting enough shut-eye can go a long way in helping us feel better overall.

Feeling like your mind is racing before bed? Try a before-bed meditation.

Remember Your Daily Dose of Self-Care

Post-election stress or not, self-care is crucial right now. Remember to get your daily dose today and check-in with how you’re feeling and what you need. Be patient and kind to yourself — there’s never been a better time to focus on self-care.
