And while some trends are questionable, we’ve been pleasantly surprised by the amount of mouth-watering 2022 viral food trends that took place this year! So, as we make our way into 2023, we’re looking back at our top favorite 2022 viral food trends that definitely deserve a spot on our plate in the year ahead.

Our Favorite 2022 Viral Food Trends (That We’re Taking into 2023)
#1 Chocolate PB Rice Cakes
Chocolate + PB — just when you thought you couldn’t combine two more delicious foods, add a crunchy rice cake to the mix for a healthy Chocolate PB Rice Cake! Game changer. This 2022 viral food trend tastes like a healthy PB cup, except it’s made with healthy wholesome ingredients. Think: real peanut butter (or any nut butter alternative), dairy-free chocolate, unsweetened rice cakes, and a hint of coconut oil. Not only is this recipe healthy and delicious, but it takes minutes to make — and you likely have all the ingredients in your kitchen!
Grab your favorite nut or seed butter, smear it on an unsweetened rice cake, and dip it in your favorite healthy chocolate bar or chocolate chips (like Hu Kitchen or Enjoy Life foods). Yep, it’s really that simple. Enjoy as a healthy snack or dessert, guilt-free! You’re welcome, sweet tooth lovers.
#2 Strawberry Glazed Skin Smoothie
Hailey Bieber is a pro at creating viral trends, and her Strawberry Glazed Skin Smoothie, in collaboration with LA’s Erewhon Market, was no exception. While we weren’t huge fans of the price tag (a whopping $17 per smoothie), we were pretty impressed with the ingredients! So much so that we made our own (totally affordable) DIY version that we’ll certainly continue blending up in the year ahead. It’s made with glowing skin ingredients like omega-rich avocado, vitamin C loaded strawberries, and optional skin superfood add-ins like sea moss and collagen.
Want a taste of the trend? Here’s the recipe!
- ½ cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk or nut milk of choice (The original recipe used MALK brand)
- 1 cup frozen strawberries
- 1-2 scoops plain or vanilla collagen protein powder
- 1 tbsp sea moss gel (or substitute for chia seeds)
- 1 serving of liquid hyaluronic acid, optional (or 1 tbsp magnesium-rich nuts or seeds)
- ¼ ripe avocado, fresh or frozen
- ½ cup coconut cream*
- 1-2 Medjool dates, soaked and pitted
- 1 tsp maple syrup (or sweetener of choice)
*Note: you can freeze full-fat coconut milk into ice cubes or buy store-bought coconut cream, such as Zuma Valley coconut cream, the brand used in the original recipe
Step #1: Add the almond milk (or liquid base of choice) to a high-speed blender. Then add the remaining ingredients.
Step #2: Blend until smooth and creamy, scraping down sides as needed. Taste test and adjust any ingredients, adding ice, additional liquid, or any other ingredients.
#3 Chia Pudding
Thanks to the viral TikTok “internal shower chia seed drink,” chia seeds made their way into many 2022 viral food trends. That said, we’re setting the record straight on these ‘healthy’ trends. While chia seeds are one of the healthiest foods (they’re full of fiber, rich in omegas, and contain an impressive amount of plant-based protein per gram), they shouldn’t be viewed as a “detox” food or drink. Yes, these superfood seeds can keep you satiated and support digestion, but the emphasis on enjoying them for “diet” and “detox” purposes promotes diet culture, which we certainly aren’t behind.
Instead, we’re all about this viral food trend in the sense that it’s jam-packed with nutrients and makes a yummy and easy-prep dessert, snack, or breakfast. And aside from being healthy and delicious, it’s incredibly simple to make! So much so that we came up with 6 different flavor variations that are drool-worthy, decadent, and totally guilt-free.
While any of these flavors will satisfy your sweet tooth, this Overnight Protein Chia Pudding is surely making it onto our 2023 menu. Here’s the recipe:
- 3 tbsp chia seeds
- 1 cup oat milk
- 1 scoop protein powder
- ½ banana, mashed
- ½ tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tbsp maple syrup
- 1 handful mixed berries
- slivered almonds, to serve
Step #1: Place the chia seeds in a bowl and cover with the oat milk. Add the protein powder, banana, cinnamon, vanilla, and pure maple syrup. Stir well.
Step #2: Place in the fridge overnight.
Step #3: Top with fresh berries and slivered almonds before enjoying.
#4 Baked Oats
We love all things oats — overnight oats, oat milk, oatmeal breakfast bowls, and oat and banana pancakes… just to name a few! So, as you may have guessed, we were huge fans of the ever-popular healthy baked oats viral food trend. Similar to overnight oats, this easy-prep recipe tastes like dessert, and it’s totally guilt-free.
This yummy recipe was all the buzz this year, with tons of flavor variations floating around the internet. From banana bread baked oats to chocolate and chocolate PB baked oats, there was no shortage of flavor options! Considering it’s mouth-watering and only requires a handful of staple ingredients, it’s no wonder baked oats was a top trending recipe. Plus, breakfast foods are always a favorite! The best part? You can even enjoy this recipe as a healthy snack or dessert.
There are tons of ways to make baked oatmeal, with plenty of healthy swaps and flavor variations. Some recipes call for banana, others add in protein powder, and some give it a creamy boost with protein-packed Greek yogurt.

- 2 cups unsweetened almond milk
- 2 bananas, mashed
- 2 cups oats
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 3 tbsp maple syrup
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 2 tbsp flaxseed meal
- ½ tsp kosher salt
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Step #1: Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Spray an 8 X 8 baking sheet with cooking spray.
Step #2: In a large bowl, mix together the oats, flaxseed meal, cinnamon, baking powder, and salt. In another bowl, mix together the milk, bananas, egg, maple syrup, and vanilla extract. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until combined. If adding mix-ins, fold them in during this step. Consider adding fresh or dried fruit, nuts, seeds, chocolate chips, shredded coconut, etc. Use 1.5 cups of mix-ins.
Step #3: Pour into the baking dish. Bake for 35-40 minutes until cooked through and lightly browned on top. Top with fresh fruit, nuts, and/or maple syrup.
