We’re all looking forward to the new year ahead, and as we wrap up 2020, we’re taking a look back at some of the super delicious and fun food-related things that came from the need for creativity during the days of quarantine. For many, this meant experimenting in the kitchen and jumping on the viral food trend bandwagon that broke records on TikTok and across social media.
The Four 2020 Viral Food Trends We Loved
TikTok has released a list of the most popular food trends of this year, and here are our top four favorites that we’re totally bringing into the new year.
#1 Pancake Cereal
Pancake + cereal — you couldn’t combine two more delicious foods, are we right? Breakfast foods always seem to be a favorite, which is why it makes a ton of sense that this 2020 viral food trend became all the buzz online.
And, according to TikTok, this grabbed the number one spot as the most popular food trend of 2020, followed by dalgona coffee.
Ok, so what exactly is it? Pancake cereal is exactly as it sounds — pancakes made into cereal. You can use your standard pancake batter mix and then add the batter to a plastic squeeze bottle or an icing piping bag that you use to create tiny pancakes on your skillet. Once cooked, pour into a bowl and serve with a drizzle of pure maple syrup and milk of choice.
To make pancake cereal a little healthier, we love the idea of using gluten-free flour and enjoying it with dairy-free milk.

#2 Banana Bread
During the early days of 2020 and the start of quarantine, you likely heard all the buzz about banana bread. It became one of the most commonly made comfort foods this year, and we can see why. It’s easy to make, only requires a handful of staple ingredients, and it’s absolutely delicious.
We were all about this viral food trends, too — so much so that we came up with 5 ways to up your banana bread game by swapping out refined sugar for natural sweeteners, making it gluten and dairy-free, and adding in some superfoods like flaxseeds or raw cacao nibs.
We also came up with a list of some delicious non-traditional ways to enjoy your banana bread, including.
- Crumble some on top of a smoothie bowl.
- Use banana bread slices to cook in coconut oil and enjoy like French toast.
- Make into a nut butter sandwich.
- Enjoy banana bread crumbles on top of your bowl of yogurt.
#3 Dalgona Coffee
We can’t forget about dalgona coffee, aka whipped coffee that was so popular that people stared dalgona coffee challenges on TikTok.
So, what is it exactly?
Dalgona coffee (aka whipped coffee) is a traditional South Korean sweet beverage treat that took the internet by storm in early 2020.
Basically, you take three ingredients, whip them all together, serve over milk, and you have yourself a delicious dalgona coffee.
During pumpkin season, we also came up with our very own healthy whipped pumpkin coffee which, literally tastes like pumpkin season bliss.
Here’s how we made it.
- 2 tbsp instant coffee
- 2 tbsp coconut sugar
- 2 tbsp boiling water
- ½ tsp pumpkin pie spice + more for serving
- 1 ½ cups oat milk
- Ice (for iced coffee)
Simply add the coffee, coconut sugar, boiling water, and pumpkin pie spice to a large mixing bowl and using a handheld mixer, or hand whisk, whip until frothy — this will take about 3 minutes. Set aside.
For Iced: If making iced, add the ice to a serving glass along with the milk and scoop the whipped coffee on top of the milk and sprinkle with extra pumpkin pie spice.
For Hot: Add the oat milk to a stockpot over low/medium heat and heat until warm. Pour into your favorite coffee mug and top with the whipped pumpkin coffee. Sprinkle with extra pumpkin pie spice.
Note: Stir the whipped pumpkin coffee into the milk before enjoying if desired.
#4 Hot Chocolate Bombs
We can’t get enough of these hot chocolate bombs. It’s definitely a 2020 viral food trend we’ll be enjoying all winter.
